In what feels like a leap straight out of sci-fi, Google has begun rolling out a groundbreaking feature that lets users create playable, interactive AI-generated worlds — and it’s available now for select premium Gemini subscribers.
What’s New: Project Genie
Google’s experimental research prototype Project Genie is now live for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. (18+) — and it's unlike any typical AI feature. Rather than just producing text or static images, this tool lets users:
Generate immersive virtual worlds from natural language prompts or images.
Explore these environments in real time — walk, fly, drive, or navigate through them.
Remix and build on existing worlds using intuitive controls and prompts.
Powered by Google’s cutting-edge Genie 3 world model, along with image models like Nano Banana Pro and AI reasoning from Gemini, these worlds are dynamic, interactable, and tailored to your imaginative input.
Here’s how creating a world with Project Genie looks in practice:
World Sketching:
Enter a prompt or upload an image, define your character and setting, and use Nano Banana Pro to preview what your world will look like before you enter it.
World Exploration:
Once inside, the world dynamically generates the environment in real time based on your movement and choices — Google’s AI predicts what comes next as you walk, fly, or zoom around.
World Remixing:
Don’t like what you created? Remix it. Add new elements, change features, or merge worlds — all through natural language tweaks. You can save or download your world interactions as short videos.
While the experience is experimental, with some limitations in realism and character responsiveness, the potential is massive. Google plans to expand access beyond the U.S. and refine the experience over time.
This update isn’t just another flashy feature — it represents a significant shift in how AI can blend creativity, interactivity, and immersive computing:
From static generation to dynamic play: Users are no longer limited to reading or viewing AI outputs — now they can step inside them.
Creative empowerment: Artists, storytellers, educators, and developers can use this tool to rapidly prototype interactive experiences without coding or 3D modeling skills.
Future of gaming and simulation: While still early, Project Genie hints at a world where games, simulations, and AI environments could be on-demand and infinitely customizable based on your own descriptions.
At the core of this innovation is Genie 3, Google’s advanced world model that doesn’t just generate scenes — it simulates how they evolve and how users interact within them. This is a leap beyond earlier text-to-image or avatar experiences, pushing toward AI that understands environment dynamics.
Currently, Project Genie is limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. who are 18 or older.
Google has indicated that it plans to expand access to more territories and refine the prototype based on user feedback.
For creative professionals, tech enthusiasts, and AI explorers alike, this tool opens up an exciting new frontier — where imagination becomes a virtual playground powered by AI.
